American competitive eater Miki Sudo consumed 16.5 pints (approximately 7.8 liters) of vanilla ice cream in 6 minutes at an eating competition in July 2020, setting a world record. The greatest challenge in ice cream eating is "brain freeze" -- a severe headache triggered when cold food causes rapid constriction of blood vessels in the palate. Competitors counter this by adjusting tongue positioning or alternating sips of warm water between mouthfuls.
